The Canadian national ice hockey team is returning to Sweden on Friday to collect their luggage, following their shocking quarter-final defeat to Denmark in the World Championship on Thursday. The team had initially traveled to Herning, Denmark, for the quarter-final match.
The Canadians had anticipated a victory over Denmark and a subsequent final weekend in Sweden, leading them to leave most of their belongings behind.
According to reports, the team didn’t even check out of their Stockholm hotel before heading to Herning. Danish assistant coach Andreas Lilja revealed that the Canadian team only brought toiletries with them, expecting a swift return.
The Canadian players are now scheduled to fly back to Sweden alongside the Danish and Swiss teams, who will compete in the semi-finals.
Despite the unexpected loss, Andreas Lilja reported that the Canadian team displayed good sportsmanship, congratulating the Danish team and acknowledging their deserving win.
The abandoned luggage underscores the magnitude of Denmark’s victory over Canada, a surprise that resonated deeply within the Canadian delegation, especially after Canada’s successful initial group stage performance where they came in first before Sweden.
