Henrik Wigh-Poulsen, the Bishop of the Diocese of Aarhus, will resign from his position at the end of April 2026. The Diocese of Aarhus announced his decision in a press release.
Wigh-Poulsen stated, “I have now been bishop for 10 years, and in April next year I will turn 67. It is a suitable time to stop and let someone new take over the office.” He also expressed his gratitude for the support and collaboration he has received during his tenure.
The Diocese of Aarhus anticipates a bishop’s ordination to take place on May 31, 2026. The Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs will announce a bishop’s election to fill the vacancy created by Wigh-Poulsen’s retirement, though a specific date has not yet been set.
Wigh-Poulsen has served as the royal confessor since 2018 and will continue in this role even after stepping down as bishop. The royal confessor serves as the priest for the royal family and is typically responsible for significant ecclesiastical events such as baptisms, marriages, and funerals.
He expressed his anticipation for having more time for other pursuits after his departure, while noting he has several busy months ahead of him before his official resignation.
