Bishop Henrik Wigh-Poulsen of the Aarhus Diocese will step down from his position at the end of April 2026. The Aarhus Diocese announced his decision in a press release.
Wigh-Poulsen stated that after serving as bishop for 10 years and approaching his 67th birthday, he believes it is an appropriate time to allow a successor to take over. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received and for the collaborative effort in sharing their core message.
Looking ahead, Wigh-Poulsen anticipates several busy months before his departure, after which he looks forward to dedicating time to other pursuits.
Following his resignation, the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs will initiate a bishop election to fill the vacancy. The Aarhus Diocese anticipates that the episcopal ordination will take place on May 31, 2026, but the exact date for the election has not yet been set.
Even after resigning as bishop, Wigh-Poulsen will continue to serve as Royal Confessor, a position he has held since 2018. As Royal Confessor, he is the priest for the royal family and is typically responsible for performing ecclesiastical duties such as baptisms, marriages, and funerals for the royal house.
