Aros Museum Expansion “The Dome” Project Delayed and Over Budget

The construction of “The Dome,” a major expansion project at the Aros art museum in Aarhus, Denmark, is facing delays and increased costs. Aarhus Municipality announced that the project will exceed its initial budget by 6.7 million kroner.

The delay stems from the bankruptcy of the original lid supplier for the dome earlier this year. Finding a new supplier and conducting new tenders contributed to the increased costs. The municipality stated that despite their efforts, the final price is higher than anticipated.

“The Dome” is a key component of Aros’ “The Next Level” expansion, which includes a 1000-square-meter underground exhibition gallery. The dome, designed by American artist James Turrell, will measure 40 meters in diameter and 15 meters in height.

The additional 6.7 million kroner will be sourced from the municipality’s Aros funding, which will include a reduction of the museum’s annual operating grant by 200,000 kroner. The total cost of the expansion project was originally estimated at just under 200 million kroner.

Major contributors to the expansion include Salling Fondene, which donated 80 million kroner, and the Ny Carlsberg Foundation, which provided 40 million kroner. An anonymous donation of 10 million kroner was also received. The remaining funds are being provided by Aros itself and Aarhus Municipality. The project was initially expected to be completed in 2023, but the completion date is now uncertain.
