Annual Testing of Warning System Shows Increased Reach

Over 90 percent of the Danish population received the test alert on their mobile phones during the annual warning system test on Wednesday, May 7th. This is according to the Danish Emergency Management Agency.

The agency’s conclusion stems from an internet survey conducted by Megafon, involving 1027 Danes. The survey, conducted between May 7th and May 12th, polled a representative sample of the population over 18 years old. The 2024 result shows an increase from last year, when 89 percent reported receiving the alert. The “S!renen” warning system, introduced in 2023, initially reached 64 percent of the population.

Acting director Christine Engel Christensen of the Danish Emergency Management Agency expressed satisfaction with the results. She stated the agency focuses on maximizing reach through various warning channels, including sirens and emergency messages. The alert system enables authorities to issue warnings in specific geographical areas during accidents or crises.

Mobile alerting complements the approximately 1000 physical warning sirens located across the country, which cover 80 percent of the population. The Danish Emergency Management Agency stated that the recipient rate aligns with other countries using similar systems. The agency attributes the increase in recipients since 2023 to the rollout of new operating systems on mobile phones.
