André Rieu Concert: A Cheerful and Accessible Classical Music Experience

André Rieu’s concert at the Royal Arena in Ørestad delivered a predictable but enjoyable experience, filled with classical music favorites and lighthearted entertainment. The audience enthusiastically participated, clapping, cheering, and even shedding tears.

The 75-year-old André Rieu, with his signature conductor’s mane and charming demeanor, presented a show that celebrated the power of music, though he himself rarely played his violin. The concert offered a mix of classical pieces, including selections from Puccini and Verdi, alongside unexpected choices like Liverpool F.C.’s anthem and “Let It Go” from “Frozen”.

German soprano Michaela Oeste stood out as a highlight, delivering impressive performances from “Madame Butterfly” and “La traviata”. The show also featured Emma Kok, a young singer battling gastroparesis, and Michel Tirabosco, a pan flute player with physical challenges, adding to the feel-good atmosphere.

The concert catered to those who enjoy classical music in a relaxed and accessible setting, featuring elements like jazz interludes with a female tenor saxophonist and tourist-themed visuals. The overall atmosphere was non-committal and encouraged audience participation, with attendees free to enjoy draft beer, take breaks, and use their mobile phones as they pleased.

The evening culminated in a joyful display of dancing and rhythmic clapping to Johann Strauss the Younger’s “An der schönen blauen Donau,” complete with colorful balloons falling from the ceiling. The concert experience was likened to a classical music version of Bakkens Hvile, offering a lighthearted and festive atmosphere for all.
