An additional 14.5 million kroner has been contributed by the Danish Nature Fund to an application pool focused on restoring and strengthening Danish marine nature, bringing the total available funding to 43.5 million kroner. This initiative aims to address the challenges facing the marine environment along the Danish coasts.
Municipalities and other local stakeholders are eligible to apply for these funds, which are intended for projects aimed at revitalizing coastal waters. These projects may include the establishment of stone reefs and eelgrass beds, both of which are vital for marine life.
Minister for Environment Magnus Heunicke (S) emphasized the importance of habitat restoration as a key tool for improving marine ecosystems. He noted that the establishment of stone reefs has been shown to reverse negative trends, leading to the return of diverse animal and plant life. The minister also highlighted the crucial role of collaboration with The Danish Nature Fund in expanding the restoration of healthy marine environments.
This funding pool is part of a broader political agreement to allocate 500 million kroner to marine nature restoration efforts by 2030 through a dedicated Marine Nature Fund. The initiative signifies a commitment to improving and preserving Danish marine biodiversity.
