Acceleration of the Establishment of the Army’s Heavy Brigade

The Danish Army’s heavy brigade will be built as quickly as possible, with parts of the army’s capabilities being advanced by several years due to the changed security policy in Europe. An allocation of DKK 2.7 billion has been made for ammunition and other equipment for infantry fighting vehicles and tanks.

The acceleration of the brigade’s establishment aims to bolster both national defense and collective deterrence, according to Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.

A brigade, the largest military unit in the Danish defense, comprises soldiers, tanks, weapons, and vehicles prepared for independent combat operations with weeks of notice. NATO has required this capability for years, and it has been a challenge for Denmark to meet its joint contribution obligations.

Most capabilities are being advanced by approximately two years, with some seeing advancements of around five years. The funds for this acceleration are sourced from the Acceleration Fund, which holds DKK 50 billion for the years 2025-2026.

The advancement of acquisitions for the heavy brigade is based on the recommendation of the Chief of Defense. Brigadier General Michael Thøgersen, head of the 1st Brigade, said that receiving ammunition and capabilities earlier than planned is very positive and will strengthen their ability to practice, develop, and operate as a heavy brigade with high combat power.
