Aarhus Pride declined sponsorship from Mærsk this year, citing conflicts with the organization’s values. This decision follows last year’s controversy at Copenhagen Pride, where Mærsk withdrew its support and instead sponsored Aarhus Pride.
While neither Aarhus Pride nor Mærsk has explicitly stated the reason, sources suggest it is related to the Israel-Palestine conflict, similar to the issues that arose in Copenhagen. Aarhus Pride emphasizes its commitment to not accepting funds from entities that profit from the suffering or oppression of others or that oppose LGBTQIA+ rights.
Aarhus University also chose not to participate in this year’s pride event. Rector Brian Bech Nielsen stated that the university supports diversity and inclusion but does not want to be associated with specific political matters.
The organizers of Copenhagen Pride in 2024 had requested sponsors to disclose their interests in Israel and Palestine, which led to several companies, including Novo Nordisk, Danske Bank, DHL, and Mærsk, withdrawing their support. Copenhagen Pride later regretted this approach and clarified that it does not take sides in the conflict nor require its partners to do so.
Aarhus Pride has adopted a more political and activist stance with its new board. This new direction has led to the organization prioritizing its values over financial gain, even if it means having a smaller event. Queer Palestinian Solidarity Aarhus had previously urged Aarhus Pride to cut ties with Mærsk, alleging the company supports the Israeli occupation.
Currently, Aarhus Pride’s main sponsors are Aarhus Municipality and Aarhus Events.
