Aarhus Municipality to Establish Specialized Care for Aggressive Nursing Home Residents

Aarhus Municipality is set to create a specialized program for care home residents exhibiting aggressive behavior, aiming to improve the quality of life for all residents and staff. The initiative responds to the challenges posed by a small number of residents whose aggression creates insecurity and limits communal activities within the care facilities.

The current situation involves approximately ten residents across the municipality’s care homes. The behavior of these individuals, often stemming from advanced dementia or other mental illnesses, has led to a tense environment, with staff reportedly facing physical and verbal abuse.

Christian Budde, Councilor for Health and Care in Aarhus Municipality, emphasized the necessity of a sustainable solution through this new specialized offer. He stated that the current lack of appropriate resources fails to meet the complex needs of these residents, negatively impacting the entire care home community.

The need for this specialized care has been highlighted by recent incidents, including reports of residents being encouraged to stay in their rooms due to the aggressive behavior of another resident. Such measures underscore the urgent need for a more effective and dignified approach.

Budde also addressed the legal and logistical challenges of relocating aggressive residents. He pointed out that lengthy processing times for guardianship applications and waiting lists for specialized facilities significantly delay the relocation process, affecting both the aggressive residents and their fellow residents. The councilor advocates for clearer legislation to better manage the duty of care and ensure a safe working environment.
