Aalborg Pirates Ice Hockey Club Approaching Change of Ownership

The Aalborg Pirates ice hockey club is on the verge of a change in ownership, with an agreement reached with a new ownership group. The announcement was made in a press release.

The transfer of the club is contingent upon a successful due diligence process and final approval. Furthermore, a new board, including a new chairman, must be appointed at a general meeting. The current chairman, Morten Fals, expressed optimism, stating that the new owners are expected to unveil their plans for the club next week, hinting at exciting prospects for the future.

The new ownership group is described as having high-level ice hockey expertise and the financial capacity to guide the club towards success. It also has ties outside of North Jutland.

Regional media reports suggest that NHL player Nikolaj Ehlers may be part of the new ownership group.

The club appointed Peter Lauridsen as acting director in early June to prepare for the ownership transition.

The Aalborg Pirates have faced financial challenges since a scandal involving former director Lars Laursen emerged over a year ago. It was discovered that Laursen had manipulated the accounts, leading to a larger financial deficit than initially believed. The club has since appealed to fans and creditors for financial assistance, citing a lack of funds to compete at the highest level.

Morten Fals expressed his gratitude to those who contributed to making the ownership change possible, acknowledging the sacrifices and goodwill required to save the club.

During the previous season, with Santeri Heiskanen as head coach, Aalborg reached the semi-finals. However, Heiskanen has since moved to a Finnish league, and Jonas Holmström has been appointed as his replacement.
