Aalborg Municipality Aims to Become European Capital of Culture in 2032

Aalborg Municipality has announced its ambition to become the European Capital of Culture in 2032, with the aim of enriching cultural life and benefiting the entire North Jutland region. The municipality believes that being chosen as the Capital of Culture would provide a significant cultural boost for the area for the next decade.

The initiative promises extensive cultural activities and events throughout the municipality, fostering a stronger and culturally enriched society. Aalborg’s Mayor, Lasse Frimand Jensen, emphasizes that the impact will be felt by both residents and visitors, creating lasting memories and positive changes.

While Aalborg is vying for the title, it faces potential competition from other Danish cities. A citizen initiative is promoting Elsinore as a strong candidate, although Helsingør Municipality has not yet formally expressed its intention to bid.

The European Capital of Culture is an EU initiative started in 1985, designed to foster closer ties between European populations. In 2032, the designation will be awarded to one city in Denmark and one in Bulgaria.
