AaB Fans Protest Against Ownership After Relegation

A series of fan protests overshadowed Lyngby’s 3-1 victory over AaB, as relegated AaB supporters directed their anger towards the club’s German ownership group, Sports Strategy Excellence 22 (SSE22).

The fans, mostly dressed in mourning black, displayed banners in both German and Danish. One banner read, “The most important match in 140 years starts today. SSE22 raus!”

Another banner targeted Ole Jan Kappmeier, a member of the ownership group and former sports director, referencing a previous promise and declaring, “Kappmeier, you said that we were welcome to hunt you out of the city if you didn’t keep your promises. Now the hunt is on!”

Current sports director James Gow was also criticized, with a banner questioning his resume, referencing his past work in Liverpool’s youth system and Al-Jazira.

The protests occurred during a match of little sporting significance, as both teams had already been relegated from the Superliga. Lyngby’s goals came from Michael Opoku and Frederik Gytkjær, with AaB’s only goal being an own goal from Lyngby captain Magnus Jensen. Gytkjær later scored again, making the score 3-1.

To add insult to injury, AaB’s Bjarne Pudel received a red card in the final minutes, resulting in a suspension for the start of the new season in the second tier.

The victory allowed Lyngby to draw level on points with AaB, surpassing them in goal difference and lifting themselves from the bottom of the league.
