Significant Regional Disparities in Higher Education Attainment Across Municipalities

In 2024, a Statistics Denmark report reveals considerable geographical differences in higher education attainment among 25-45 year olds across Danish municipalities. The highest proportion of individuals with higher education is found in Gentofte Municipality, with 74 percent.

Municipalities north of Copenhagen, including Rudersdal and Lyngby-Taarbæk, also show high rates. Conversely, Lolland, Morsø, and Brøndby have the lowest proportions, with 39 percent of 25-45 year olds having attained higher education.

The report indicates a trend where municipalities with higher overall educational attainment see a preference for long higher education programs. In contrast, municipalities with lower attainment rates tend to have a higher proportion of individuals completing medium-length higher education programs.

The national average for higher education attainment among 25-45 year olds in 2024 was 53 percent, representing a 12 percentage point increase since 2014. The proportion of individuals currently pursuing or having interrupted higher education has remained stable at 3-5 percent during this period.

Statistics Denmark’s data suggests a correlation between parental education levels and their children’s educational attainment. Among 25-45 year olds whose parents’ highest level of education was primary school, 27 percent had attained higher education in 2024. However, among those whose parents had completed long higher education programs, 78 percent had also attained higher education.
