Insurance Companies Report Fewer Damage Claims Than Expected After Recent Heavy Rainfall

Despite warnings of dangerous weather, insurance companies in Denmark have received fewer reports of damage than anticipated following recent heavy rainfall. Topdanmark, If, Tryg, Alm. Brand, Codan, and GF Forsikring collectively report around 1110 claims after Monday and Tuesday’s rain.

While the number of claims is lower than initially feared, insurance companies anticipate more reports in the coming days. Tryg, for example, has observed an increase in claims on Wednesday, with water backing up through sewer systems, especially on the South Sea Islands.

The insurance companies state that the majority of claims received thus far involve water in basements, leaks through roofs, and sewer backups.

One possible explanation for the lower-than-expected claim numbers is that people have become more proactive in protecting their properties from water damage. GF Forsikring noted that basements are now often designed with materials that are easier to clean and more resistant to water damage, such as replacing wooden floors and plasterboard walls.

If and Topdanmark also anticipate receiving additional reports as people return from holiday and discover water damage in their homes.
