New Teaching Materials to Help Danish Students Resist Tobacco and Nicotine

The Danish Health Authority has introduced new educational resources for students in grades 5-7 to address the rising use of tobacco and nicotine products among young people. These materials aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills to resist peer pressure and make informed decisions about their health.

The curriculum focuses on building positive, tobacco- and nicotine-free social environments. Students will learn about the adverse effects of tobacco and nicotine and understand the nature of addiction.

A recent study from the National Institute of Public Health at the University of Southern Denmark revealed a significant increase in tobacco and nicotine use among 15-17 year olds. In 2024, 29.2% of this age group reported using at least one tobacco or nicotine product, compared to 19.5% in 2020.

The teaching resources are designed for professionals, including teachers, educators, and health consultants. They include short films presenting dilemmas and guides for both professionals and parents.

The initiative is part of a broader political agreement from 2023 to prevent the use of tobacco, nicotine, and alcohol among children and young people. The goal is to empower parents and professionals to engage in meaningful conversations with children about the risks associated with these substances and create a supportive environment where young people feel comfortable saying no.
