King Frederik’s new march of honor will premiere on Monday at noon when he appears on the balcony of Frederik VIII’s Palace in Copenhagen. The Royal House announced the debut will coincide with the Royal Life Guards’ grand changing of the guard ceremony on the King’s 57th birthday.
The changing of the guard will occur shortly before noon at Amalienborg Palace Square. The royal family is scheduled to appear on the balcony at 12:00 PM, where the King, along with his family, will greet the public. Last year, during King Frederik’s first birthday as regent, his royal march of honor was not yet composed, so his previous march as crown prince was played.
The new march was the result of a competition open to the public announced in October of last year. The Royal House received 68 submissions. A professional jury selected five finalists, who were then performed by the Royal Life Guards’ Music Corps. David M.A.P. Palmquist composed the winning march.
It has become tradition for royal marches to be created through collaboration between the regent and the composer. Palmquist presented the winning march to the King, who helped refine it. Since the mid-1800s, the monarch’s personal march of honor has been played during the changing of the guard at the regent’s residence and at significant Royal House events. Frederik VIII was the first to have his own march composed, making this the first public performance of King Frederik’s march.
