Nets is working to resolve lingering issues with its payment system following a major breakdown that caused widespread disruptions across the Nordic region on Saturday. According to Nets’ press officer, Søren Winge, some systems and terminals may still require updates on Sunday.
The company reports that its systems are currently operating normally. However, the cause of Saturday evening’s system failure remains unknown. Nets is actively working to guide customers through the ongoing process and analyze the breakdown to prevent future incidents.
The breakdown resulted in significant problems with card payments throughout the Nordic region. In Denmark, the Great Belt Bridge experienced long queues and driver frustration. South Zealand and Lolland-Falster Police reported death threats against staff on social media platform X, and two booms were forced open, prompting Sund & Bælt to consider reporting the responsible drivers to the police.
The outage affected all card types and also impacted Tivoli amusement park, where a Tom Jones concert was held. Tivoli stated in a press release that it sustained a direct loss in revenue as a result of the payment system failure. Tivoli’s director, Susanne Mørch Koch, emphasized the need for a stronger structure for handling and information in the event of such disruptions, both technical and targeted.
