Nets Breakdown Causes Payment Issues at Grøn Koncert and Samsø Festival

A Nets payment system failure severely impacted the Grøn Koncert in Aarhus and the Samsø Festival on Saturday evening, causing significant payment problems and forcing organizers to implement emergency plans. The breakdown disrupted card payments at both events, which operate as cashless festivals.

The Grøn Koncert experienced issues from 7 PM until its closing at 9:30 PM due to the Nets malfunction. Festival staff worked to enable physical card payments where possible, and MobilePay was readjusted to accommodate guests. According to Theis Petersen, head of fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, the organizer of Grøn Koncert, the breakdown hindered the speed and efficiency of transactions, leaving some attendees unable to make purchases. Petersen noted that the guests remained patient and understanding despite the inconvenience. Despite the vulnerability exposed by the breakdown, Petersen does not anticipate a return to cash payments, emphasizing the benefits of cashless systems when functioning correctly.

The Samsø Festival also felt the effects of the Nets outage, requiring staff to adapt by prioritizing MobilePay payments. Thomas Jakobsen, chairman of the board of Samsø Festival, stated that despite the risk of digital breakdowns, the advantages of operating without cash outweigh the potential problems, especially considering the increasing challenges associated with handling physical money. Jakobsen highlights the significant benefit of not having to manage large cash holdings.

Nets has issued a statement ruling out external malicious influence as the cause of the breakdown but has not yet identified the specific reason for the system failure.
