Frederiksberg Mayor Criticizes Copenhagen’s High-Rise Construction

Frederiksberg’s Mayor Michael Vindfeldt has voiced strong opposition to high-rise buildings in neighboring Copenhagen, particularly in the newly developed Carlsberg Byen, arguing they clash with Frederiksberg’s traditional low-rise aesthetic. He emphasizes the importance of preserving Frederiksberg’s unique character and opposes large-scale construction that could fundamentally alter the city’s identity.

Vindfeldt believes Copenhagen’s high-rise developments, exceeding 20 floors, disrupt the view from Frederiksberg and set a bad precedent for urban planning. He asserts that such buildings would never be permitted in Frederiksberg under his leadership, reflecting a commitment to maintaining the area’s established architectural style.

The debate extends to the broader issue of housing shortages in the capital. While acknowledging the need for affordable housing, Vindfeldt maintains that Frederiksberg should not compromise its distinctive character through extensive new construction. He suggests focusing on preserving existing affordable housing and ensuring a portion of new developments, such as the Hospital Grounds project, are designated for public housing.

Vindfeldt argues that addressing housing affordability is a shared responsibility. He believes Copenhagen Municipality and the national government must also contribute to creating more affordable housing options in the region. He also reiterated he will not compromise on green areas.
