Danish Retailers Benefit from Offline Dankort Payments During Nets Breakdown

A Nets breakdown on Saturday evening highlighted the advantage for Danish retailers who accept offline Dankort payments. According to Henrik Lundgaard Sedenmark, Head of Payments at the Danish Chamber of Commerce, retailers are in a “pretty good position” due to this capability.

The advantage stems from the ability of customers to pay with their physical Dankort even during a Nets outage, provided the store has power and accepts Dankort. This relies on the terminal being in offline mode, a condition retailers and customers must be aware of.

While Dankort payments are always possible in offline mode, acceptance of Visa and Mastercard is not guaranteed. Furthermore, digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay are typically non-functional during such breakdowns.

However, major supermarket chains are actively developing solutions to enable the use of digital wallets like Apple Pay during future outages. The Danish Chamber of Commerce reports that all five major grocery chains are working on this, with varying progress among them.

The possibility of enabling offline payments extends beyond grocery stores. According to Henrik Lundgaard Sedenmark, any payment recipient can make an agreement with their acquirer to enable offline mode for cards other than Dankort. The cause of the Nets breakdown on Saturday evening remains unknown as of Sunday morning.
