FC Copenhagen narrowly defeated Viborg 3-2 in their Superliga premiere match on Friday night, despite a late surge from the home team. The defending champions maintained control for a significant portion of the game but conceded several significant opportunities to Viborg in the final stages.
Magnus Mattsson, the match-winner, acknowledged the team’s shortcomings despite the victory. “It’s great to get three points in a difficult away game,” he stated, emphasizing the relief of securing the win. However, he also noted, “I think we gave too much away. Especially the last quarter, where they had two-three hundred percent chances. So it’s not good enough.” Mattsson, who was later substituted, stressed that securing the three points was the most important outcome of the challenging away match.
Dominik Kotarski, making his debut in Copenhagen’s goal, played a crucial role in the victory, especially during the intense final minutes. He made several key saves to prevent Viborg from equalizing. “It’s my job. I have to save something,” Kotarski said, downplaying his individual contribution. He expressed disappointment about the two goals conceded from set pieces but emphasized his focus on reacting to the immediate threats. “This time I helped, but it’s a team victory,” he added.
Kotarski also highlighted the significance of avoiding a repeat of last season’s defeat to Viborg. He expressed satisfaction with the win, acknowledging the difficulty top teams face when playing in Viborg. “It was a difficult and intense match. I’ve heard that it’s hard to win here for the top teams, so I’m happy with the win, and I think we played really well,” the Croatian goalkeeper concluded.
