Police Employee Foils Contact Fraud Attempt, Two Arrested

A police employee in South Zealand and Lolland-Falster became the target of an attempted contact fraud on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of two men believed to be connected to multiple scams. According to a press release from the police district, the employee was contacted by an individual impersonating a representative from the National Police (Rigspolitiet).

The caller claimed the employee’s MitID had been compromised and offered to send someone to collect their card and code. When a 32-year-old man arrived at the employee’s residence, officers were waiting and promptly arrested him.

A subsequent search of a nearby vehicle uncovered a 29-year-old man suspected of collaborating with the 32-year-old. Police also discovered a substantial amount of cash and several payment cards belonging to various individuals inside the vehicle.

South Zealand and Lolland-Falster Police suspect the two men are linked to several contact fraud cases in Slagelse and Næstved in the past week, as well as in Roskilde earlier this month. Both individuals are expected to appear in a preliminary hearing at the Court of Næstved on Thursday.

Deputy Police Inspector Martin Eise Eriksen stated that the police district has received multiple reports of contact fraud in the last 24 hours. The perpetrators typically impersonate National Police officers, targeting elderly and vulnerable citizens. Eriksen emphasized that anyone can potentially fall victim to these crimes.

Eriksen added that the arrests represent a significant step in the ongoing investigative efforts and that authorities will investigate any connections between the detained individuals and other fraud cases, both locally and nationally.
