Nearly 700 racing pigeons are missing after a race in Southern and South Jutland, leaving their owners worried and appealing for help. The incident occurred during a “kapflyvning” (competitive flying) event held in Vejen on Saturday, where 900 young pigeons were released with the intention of flying back to Northern Jutland.
However, unforeseen weather conditions caused the pigeons to lose their way. According to reports, a weather front with contrasting temperatures disoriented the birds, leading them to settle in the Southern and South Jutland area instead of returning home.
The situation is described as unusual by experienced pigeon racers. Hans-Jørn Thomsen, who has been involved with racing pigeons for over 40 years, stated that he has “never experienced anything like it.”
Authorities are urging residents in Southern and South Jutland to be vigilant and report any sightings of racing pigeons to The Danish Racing Pigeon Association. Approximately 50 of the missing pigeons have been located in cities like Haderslev, Bramming, and Esbjerg so far. In contrast, an earlier release of 500 older pigeons during the same event resulted in all birds successfully returning home.
