Grindsted secured its place in the Herreligaen (Men’s League) with a thrilling 27-26 victory over Skive in the third and decisive playoff match. The win ensures that the town of nearly 10,000 residents will continue to enjoy top-level men’s handball after the summer holidays.
The final match was a nail-biter, with the league place being decided in the last minute. Grindsted initially struggled, allowing Skive to take an early lead, but the home team gradually fought back.
Skive started strong, with Emil Grønbech putting the guests ahead 10-5 midway through the first half. However, Grindsted found its rhythm and, led by Nicolai Skytte, managed to equalize at 13-13. The home team capitalized on this momentum to secure a 16-14 lead at halftime.
Skive responded early in the second half, equalizing the score. Grindsted then appeared to take control, with Frederik Nielsen’s goal putting them ahead 23-18 with just under 15 minutes remaining. However, a scoring drought allowed Skive to mount a comeback, tying the game at 24-24 and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
The final minutes were tense, with Frederik Iversen scoring the decisive goal for Grindsted with 59 seconds left on the clock, making it 27-26. Despite having time to equalize, Skive was unable to score, leading to jubilant celebrations among the Grindsted players.
