Danish Meteorological Institute Warns of Continued Cloudburst Risk

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) is maintaining its warning for local cloudbursts across a large portion of Denmark, following heavy rain and cloudbursts that impacted the country on Tuesday. Duty meteorologist Lars Henriksen stated early Wednesday that while the warning remains in effect, there is increased uncertainty about the likelihood of cloudbursts today, though the risk of thunderstorms also exists.

The areas most at risk until late Wednesday afternoon include most of Zealand, the northern part of Funen, and the region north of the line between Vejle and Ringkøbing Fjord. The potential intensity of these cloudbursts could reach up to 25 millimeters of precipitation in half an hour.

On Tuesday, DMI recorded cloudbursts in 22 of Denmark’s 98 municipalities, with some areas, particularly Lolland and East Zealand, experiencing double cloudbursts. This likely occurred in other unmeasured locations as well. A double cloudburst is defined as 30 millimeters or more of precipitation falling within half an hour.

Henriksen described the current weather situation as “treacherous,” noting the atmosphere’s instability and high humidity levels, which can lead to sudden and intense showers.

DMI is also monitoring the situation to determine if a cloudburst warning will be necessary for Thursday. While showers are expected to continue through the weekend, they are unlikely to reach cloudburst intensity after Thursday.

Due to the significant rainfall in the past 24 hours, there is a risk of standing water on roads in some areas. People are urged to exercise caution while traveling.
