Danish national handball team player Louise Burgaard is pregnant and expecting her first child in January. The Odense Håndbold player announced the news on Instagram.
Burgaard will miss a significant portion of the upcoming season due to her pregnancy. However, she aims to support her Odense Håndbold teammates from the sidelines early in the season and hopes to return to the court later to pursue more titles.
The 32-year-old right back, a key player for the Danish national team since her debut in 2011, also expressed her strong ambition and motivation to return to both club and national team play after her pregnancy.
She missed the European Championships in December due to injury, and will also be absent from the World Cup in December.
Last year, during an injury break, Burgaard addressed the issue of inappropriate pregnancy inquiries, urging people to refrain from asking female handball players about pregnancy status when they are not playing, highlighting the sensitivity and privacy of the matter.
Burgaard rejoined Danish handball and Odense in 2024 after a five-year stint with Metz in France. Last season, she contributed to Odense’s Danish Championship victory and their appearance in the Champions League final. Her career also includes playing for Holstebro, Viborg, and FC Midtjylland.
