Team Denmark is cautioning athletes about the negative impacts of smokeless nicotine products, including snus and nicotine pouches, on recovery and performance. This warning comes amid concerns over increased usage of these products among athletes.

According to Majke Jørgensen, a nutritionist at Team Denmark, while many perceive smokeless nicotine products as a safe alternative to smoking, they are detrimental to both general health and athletic performance. The organization strongly advises against the use of snus, nicotine pouches, and similar products.

While nicotine products might initially enhance focus and sharpness, Team Denmark emphasizes that research indicates this effect primarily benefits individuals already addicted. The overall consequences of using smokeless nicotine during elite sports are predominantly negative, despite any temporary effects on the autonomic nervous system.

The Danish Health Authority also highlights the risks associated with nicotine use during adolescence. Nicotine can cause lasting harm to the brain, impair concentration, and elevate the risk of mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
