Prioritizing Danish Citizens in Labor Policy and EU Deregulation

Denmark faces a labor shortage and is considering bringing in more foreign workers, but critics argue the focus should first be on utilizing the existing workforce within the country. Concerns have been raised about the cultural integration and financial impact of relying on foreign labor instead of prioritizing Danish citizens.

Gert Løfgren of the Danish People’s Party emphasizes the need to prioritize Danish citizens, including seniors, flex workers, and those with reduced working capacity, who are willing to contribute to the workforce. He argues that these individuals possess valuable experience and connection to the country but are often overlooked in employment policies. Løfgren also points to young people on the edge of the labor market who could benefit from targeted support.

Erik Danskov Frederiksen from the Liberal Youth highlights Denmark’s opportunity during its EU Presidency to advocate for deregulation and reduce bureaucracy. He argues that excessive regulation hampers innovation, growth, and competitiveness, particularly in the digital and technological fields. Frederiksen urges Denmark to push for simpler processes and fewer rules to enable European companies to compete globally.

Helle Marckmann expresses concern about the potential influx of workers from countries with vastly different cultures, specifically questioning the inclusion of Malaysia on the list of acceptable countries for labor immigration. Marckmann suggests focusing on training and upgrading the skills of the approximately 45,000 unemployed young people aged 18-24 already in Denmark to avoid repeating past mistakes of importing labor from foreign cultures.
