Møns Klint Added to UNESCO World Heritage List

Møns Klint’s iconic chalk cliffs have been officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The announcement, made on Sunday, marks the 12th site in the Danish Realm to receive this prestigious recognition.

The designation signifies the site’s outstanding universal value, recognizing its importance not only to Denmark but to all of humanity. UNESCO’s World Heritage List, established in 1972, aims to protect irreplaceable cultural and natural heritage for future generations.

Vordingborg Municipality announced the official inclusion on its website, noting that the decision came earlier than anticipated. The application for nomination was submitted to UNESCO in January 2024.

Nils Natorp, director of GeoCenter Møns Klint, emphasized the site’s unique significance for understanding the Ice Age. He described Møns Klint as one of the best locations globally to observe the impact of glacial activity on the landscape. The cliff’s cross-section provides a direct view into the processes that shaped the region during the Ice Age.
