The Resume is Absolutely Crucial in Your Job Search

A well-crafted resume is paramount to securing a job interview, according to seasoned headhunter Kristine Cholewa. With over 20 years of experience in executive search and recruitment, Cholewa emphasizes that a sharp, clear, and targeted resume is essential for job seekers.

Cholewa, currently a partner at Amrop, which specializes in leadership and board member recruitment, believes the resume holds more weight than the cover letter in the initial stages of the application process. She states that the resume is what sparks curiosity and prompts further reading of the application.

Cholewa views the resume as a “business card” that leaves a lasting impression on headhunters. It should provide an outline of your qualifications, highlighting the experiences and skills relevant to the specific job. She advises tailoring the resume to each position, emphasizing experiences that showcase your abilities and achievements.

For those with extensive experience, Cholewa recommends focusing on the most essential qualifications for the desired job. Younger applicants with less work experience should highlight their personal qualities, passions, and other experiences, such as gap year trips or leisure activities, demonstrating how these have contributed to their leadership or teamwork skills. Elaborating on the experiences gained from various activities is crucial.

Cholewa offers three key pieces of advice for resume writing:

  1. Be Specific: Provide context and details about your roles, projects, and accomplishments. Quantify your achievements and responsibilities to give a clear picture of your contributions.
  2. Write a Short Description of Yourself: Include a brief summary highlighting your key skills and qualities as an employee, outlining what you can bring to the role.
  3. Be Completely Honest: Avoid embellishing your qualifications, as dishonesty can have negative consequences for both you and the employer.

Ultimately, Cholewa stresses the importance of seeing the resume as a “menu for a dialogue,” showcasing your skills and experiences in a way that piques the employer’s interest and leads to a conversation.
