Møns Klint and its surrounding areas have officially been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This announcement comes directly from UNESCO, the United Nations organization focused on education, science, and culture.
With this addition, Møns Klint becomes the 12th site within the Danish Realm to be included on the prestigious list. Other notable Danish sites already recognized include Roskilde Cathedral, Stevns Klint, and Kronborg.
The World Heritage List, established by UNESCO in 1972, serves to protect globally significant cultural and natural heritage. Inclusion on the list signifies a commitment to preserving these sites for future generations.
The process for inclusion involves states submitting proposals to the World Heritage Committee, which convenes annually to review nominations. Roughly 25 to 30 sites are added to the list each year based on specific criteria.
Denmark’s formal application for Møns Klint’s nomination was submitted to UNESCO in January 2024, according to the Ministry of Culture.
