Alcohol’s Dual Role: Networking Tool and Declining Trend in the Workplace

Alcohol’s role in professional networking is evolving, with a shift towards sobriety in some circles even though it has historically been a facilitator for building relationships and exchanging information in many industries. While some argue that alcohol fosters genuine connections, a growing trend, particularly among younger professionals, favors alcohol-free alternatives and sober networking.

Adam Holm, co-founder of production company Blonde Inc., acknowledges the historical importance of alcohol in his career but notes a shift in New York towards “sober curiosity.” Holm’s early career involved Copenhagen nightclubs, where alcohol-fueled interactions helped him build relationships.

In New York, Holm observes a growing trend of professionals, especially those in creative and financial sectors, embracing sobriety and alcohol-free alternatives. This “sober curious” movement involves alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks or abstaining altogether.

The rise of alcohol-free alternatives reflects a broader trend, with breweries and the cocktail industry investing heavily in non-alcoholic options. Sales of alcohol-free beer have increased significantly, driven in part by younger generations drinking less alcohol.

Holm predicts this trend will continue to grow in Denmark, with younger people having a different relationship with alcohol. He also notes the influence of legalized cannabis and psychedelic drugs in New York, which offer alternative social experiences.
