Spring Agreement Reached to Transform Danish Healthcare System

The Danish government, Danish Regions, and Local Government Denmark have reached a multi-billion kroner agreement to overhaul the healthcare system, shifting services from hospitals to local communities

A significant portion, DKK 3.5 billion, will be allocated to local health services, funding new construction, renovations, IT upgrades, and equipment to bring treatment closer to citizens.

Municipal health services will see substantial reinforcement, with health councils receiving DKK 0.6 billion in 2027, increasing to DKK 2 billion in 2030.

To ensure quality and coherence, DKK 4.2 billion will be transferred to regions along with health tasks.

The agreement also aims to increase the number of specialists, providing 130 additional courses annually, including 50 in general medicine, reaching a total of 1270 courses per year from 2026-2030.

These measures shall support the goal of achieving at least 5000 general practitioners in 2035.

Furthermore, 30 extraordinary training courses will be established in general medicine, psychiatry, and geriatrics in rural areas.

To address the distribution of specialists, a ceiling will be placed on specialist positions at university hospitals and hospitals in the capital area, with the exception of Bornholm.

To improve doctor coverage in remote areas, DKK 85 million in 2025 and DKK 163 million in 2026 will be allocated to support areas with few doctors.

Additional support includes DKK 11 million in 2025 and DKK 22 million in 2026 for trainee doctors in general medicine, and DKK 50 million in 2026 to reduce waiting times for specialists.
