Europe’s Digital Sovereignty in an Existential Crisis

Europe faces a critical juncture in its technological independence and cultural identity amid growing concerns about reliance on American tech giants and shifting global dynamics. Malou Aamund, a former executive at IBM, Microsoft, and Google, highlights the urgency for Europe to address its digital sovereignty while preserving its core values.

The debate over Europe’s digital sovereignty has intensified, fueled by anxieties about potential overreach from American tech companies and a perceived lag in innovation compared to the US and China. Aamund emphasizes that complete independence from American tech is currently unrealistic due to the efficiency gap, but stresses the importance of gradually building independence, starting with securing critical infrastructure in national data centers.

Europe is grappling with fundamental questions about its identity and values in a rapidly changing world. Aamund identifies core European values like dignity, democracy, equality, and the rule of law as unifying forces. However, she cautions against elitism and the need to address inequalities within Europe, which can fuel anti-democratic sentiments.

The discussion about Europe’s future extends beyond technology to include cultural and military rearmament. Aamund underscores the necessity of this debate, citing a past reliance on cheap Russian gas and American security. She argues that Europe must test its values in the face of adversity and avoid prioritizing short-term gains over long-term principles.

Several European leaders are mentioned as potential candidates for steering the continent forward, including Ursula von der Leyen, Friedrich Merz, Emmanuel Macron and Mette Frederiksen. Aamund cautions against leaders who become too elitist and lose touch with the population.

Aamund also addresses concerns about the US, describing a society struggling with inequality, misinformation, and a breakdown in democratic conversation. She warns that Europe could face similar challenges if it doesn’t address these issues proactively. While acknowledging consumer activism and individual choices regarding products, Aamund emphasizes the importance of creating growth, competition, and jobs within European companies.
