All eleven racing bikes stolen from the Cofidis team during the Tour de France have been recovered after a two-day search. The bikes, worth approximately one million kroner, were returned to the team, according to a press release.
The theft was discovered on Sunday morning as the team prepared for the second stage of the race. Eleven Look racing bikes, valued at nearly 100,000 kroner each, were missing from the team’s hotel.
Cofidis personnel located five of the stolen bikes in the area on Sunday. The remaining six bikes were found on Monday afternoon following a search by the Tour organizer, ASO, and local police.
According to the press release, the national police informed ASO and Cofidis that the bikes were found in the village of Halluin, near the Belgian border. Police contacted Cofidis to return the bikes to the team’s staff.
The team suspected that an organized gang was behind the theft. It is currently unclear whether any arrests have been made in connection with the case.
Despite the missing bikes, Cofidis was able to secure replacements before the start of the second stage. The team’s performance in the Tour de France has been relatively unremarkable, with the exception of Bryan Coquard’s involvement in a crash on Monday. The crash resulted in Jasper Philipsen’s withdrawal from the race due to a broken collarbone and fractured ribs.
