Newly Graduated Student’s Job Center Experience Sparks Debate

A recent graduate’s criticism of the job center system has ignited a debate about financial support for young people between high school and higher education. The graduate described his experience as “disgusting and heartless,” citing the lack of educational support for those without state education grants (SU) during the months leading up to the start of their studies.

The core of the issue revolves around whether young people who plan to attend higher education in the fall should receive educational support during the summer months. According to the Ministry of Employment, this support is intended for those who “cannot immediately start an education” and is therefore not designed for soon-to-be students. The standard rate for those under 25 living at home is approximately 3,000 DKK per month.

Cultural commentator Anne Sophia Hermansen criticized the graduate’s sentiment, arguing that individuals cannot demand others to finance their feelings. Instead, she suggests exploring other opportunities during the summer months.

HORESTA, an industry organization representing the hotel, restaurant, and tourism sector, encourages young people to seek temporary employment. CEO Jeppe Møller-Herskind stated that finding a job in their industry is achievable with effort. He emphasizes that HORESTA offers opportunities for individuals with limited experience to gain valuable work skills and earn income.

Consumer economist Carsten Holdum offers several tips for young people entering the workforce. He advises leveraging social connections for job leads, being flexible with job choices, prioritizing saving, understanding the length of working life, and recognizing the influence of parental financial habits. Holdum highlights the importance of networking, suggesting graduates inquire about job openings through friends. He also emphasizes the value of experiencing different types of work, even those that may not be ideal long-term.
