Jonas Vingegaard is pushing back against media interpretations of his wife’s criticism of his team, Visma-Lease a Bike, stating the comments were taken out of context and sensationalized. He addressed the controversy during an interview, expressing frustration with the media for focusing on the issue instead of the race.
Vingegaard’s wife and manager, Trine Hansen, had voiced concerns about the team pushing him too hard, citing excessive altitude training camps and travel, which she believes could lead to burnout. She also suggested the team should prioritize Vingegaard’s Tour de France victory over stage wins for teammates.
The interview sparked widespread reactions, with some Danish cycling commentators criticizing Hansen’s statements. Former cyclist Michael Rasmussen expressed disbelief at her comments, while cycling expert Brian Nygaard suggested she was creating division between Vingegaard and his team.
Visma-Lease a Bike’s sports director attempted to minimize the situation. Vingegaard’s teammate, Wout van Aert, said he was surprised and saddened by the article but emphasized his commitment to the team’s goals, including his own stage wins, which he confirmed were aligned with Vingegaard’s support. Van Aert reassured that his friendship with Vingegaard remains intact.
