EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed confidence in Denmark’s ability to effectively manage its upcoming EU presidency, particularly in key areas such as security, defense, and trade. Speaking at a joint press conference in Aarhus with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, von der Leyen highlighted Denmark’s knack for getting things done, which she believes is crucial at this moment.
Von der Leyen specifically mentioned five areas where she hopes to see significant progress during the Danish presidency: security and defense, competitiveness, trade agreements, migration, and Ukraine.
Regarding security and defense, von der Leyen anticipates Denmark’s support in finalizing the SAFE loan instrument, aimed at financing European defense initiatives. She also expects Denmark to play a key role in advancing the Readiness 2030 proposal on defense preparedness.
On the topic of competitiveness, the Commission President is looking to Denmark to facilitate the negotiation of simplification packages, referred to as omnibus packages. The goal is to adopt one such package per month in the EU Council of Ministers.
Concerning trade, von der Leyen hopes Denmark will contribute to finalizing trade agreements with Mercosur countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay), Mexico, and India before the year’s end. These agreements are seen as vital for reducing Europe’s dependence on other nations, such as the USA.
Migration is another priority, with von der Leyen expecting progress in negotiations regarding the designation of safe third countries. Prime Minister Frederiksen echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for Europe to strengthen its external borders and expressing satisfaction with the Commission’s proposal to establish departure centers outside the EU, calling it “a step in the right direction”.
