Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Denmark on Thursday to discuss the country’s path to EU membership. The visit coincides with Denmark assuming the EU presidency for the next six months.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen affirmed Denmark’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s EU aspirations. She emphasized that Ukraine’s membership is in the best interest of both Denmark and Europe.
The Danish government strongly supports Ukraine’s admittance into both the EU and NATO and intends to prioritize EU membership during its presidency.
Discussions during the visit will focus on maximizing support for Ukraine under the Danish presidency, including its progress toward EU membership.
Prime Minister Frederiksen highlighted the importance of Ukraine for Europe’s security, stating that supporting Ukraine is a defense of European freedom. She also mentioned the need to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions.
Additional topics for discussion include increased military support, cooperation with the Ukrainian defense industry, and new sanctions against Russia.
Denmark aims to intensify pressure on Hungary, which has blocked the EU from starting negotiations with Ukraine on joining the union.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Denmark’s efficient approach, emphasizing the need for a “speed mindset” in Europe.
King Frederik hosted Zelenskyy, von der Leyen, Frederiksen, and Council President Antonio Costa at Marselisborg Palace on Thursday afternoon.
