DAO Aims to Become Denmark’s New Postal Service as PostNord Exits Letter Delivery

DAO aims to become Denmark’s primary postal service provider as PostNord prepares to discontinue its letter delivery services at the end of the year. This transition comes with promising indicators that postal service quality may not decline.

Recent data from the Danish Transport Authority reveals that DAO successfully delivered 99% of its letters within five days, surpassing PostNord’s 90% delivery rate. This marks a considerable advancement for DAO, which only achieved an 88% delivery rate within the same timeframe in a prior assessment conducted in December.

Line Elikofer, the head of the postal area at the Danish Transport Authority, expressed satisfaction with DAO’s progress, stating, “The survey demonstrates that both DAO and PostNord are effectively delivering mail.” She also noted that DAO’s improved delivery times suggest the company has stabilized as a nationwide distributor.

PostNord’s 90% delivery rate represents a decrease of two percentage points compared to the previous evaluation. The Danish Transport Authority conducted the latest measurement by sending 2,616 standard letters across the country and tracking their delivery times.

The results showed that 99.8% of the letters reached their intended recipients, a 2.9 percentage point increase from December. DAO and PostNord each handled half of the sent letters.

PostNord had announced in March its decision to cease ordinary mail distribution by 2026, focusing solely on parcel delivery. The company attributed this change to the diminishing volume of letters in Denmark due to digitization, making letter delivery an unprofitable venture after 400 years.

DAO, already involved in distributing newspapers, parcels, and magazines, has offered to distribute standard letters nationwide for DKK 23 per letter (up to 100 grams). This is a more competitive price than PostNord’s DKK 29 charge for a similar letter.
