Danish Meteorological Institute Issues Severe Weather Warning for Parts of Denmark

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has issued a category 1 warning for severe weather, indicating a risk of heavy rain and local cloudbursts in several regions of Denmark. The affected areas include the South Funen archipelago, South Zealand, Lolland, and Falster.

Later in the night, the severe weather warning has been extended to cover the rest of Zealand. The primary concern is the potential for significant rainfall, with some locations possibly experiencing between 20 and 35 millimeters of rain. Additionally, there is a risk of local cloudbursts, defined as more than 15 millimeters of rain falling within a 30-minute period.

The expected heavy precipitation is attributed to a low-pressure area developing over the Netherlands and Belgium. This low-pressure system is forecasted to move northeastward, impacting Denmark in the late afternoon or early evening. This weather pattern is expected to bring rain and showers, which could be heavy in some areas and accompanied by thunder.

Heavy rain is defined as rainfall exceeding 24 millimeters within a six-hour period. Cloudbursts are more typical in Denmark during the summer months. The first cloudburst of the year occurred on June 1, affecting three locations in Jutland.
