Civil Engineering Remains Most Popular Education in Denmark

Civil engineering remains the most sought-after education in Denmark, attracting 4301 applicants. This is according to a statement from the Ministry of Higher Education and Science regarding applications for higher education.

A total of 85,508 individuals have applied for higher education this year, marking a slight increase of 356 applicants compared to 2024. These figures encompass both quota 1 and quota 2 applications.

The popularity of civil engineering surpassed teacher education programs last year. This year, there has also been a slight rise in applications for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) educations, including civil engineering.

In 2024, 19,877 individuals have applied for STEM educations.

Minister for Higher Education and Science Christina Egelund (M) expressed satisfaction with the small overall increase in applications this year. She also emphasized the importance of maintaining high application numbers for IT and STEM educations to meet the demands of the business community.

Conversely, applications for humanities educations have decreased, with 5138 individuals applying this year. Programs in foreign languages have experienced a notable decline in applicant numbers.

Since 2020, there has been a decline in applications for the four major welfare educations: pedagogue, teacher, nurse, and social worker. This trend continues this year, with an overall decrease of approximately two percent in applications for these programs. Nursing education has been particularly affected, experiencing an eight percent reduction in applicants this year.

Egelund described the application numbers for nursing education as “surprising.” While other welfare-oriented educations remain roughly at the same level as last year, she speculated that prospective students consider factors such as the study environment, academic level, and future career prospects when choosing an education.

The application deadline for quota 1 admissions, which are based solely on grade point average, was at 12:00 on Saturday. The application deadline for quota 2 admissions, which consider both grade point average and other academic and general activities, was in March.

Applicants will be informed of their admission status on July 28.
