The number of applicants for language programs in higher education has fallen by 23 percent in one year, according to the Ministry of Higher Education and Science. This decline encompasses both quota 1 and quota 2 applicants.
Minister for Higher Education and Science Christina Egelund (M) expressed serious concern about this trend, emphasizing the essential role of language education in a civilized society and indicating her intention to take action. A total of 1,317 individuals applied for language education programs this year.
Specifically, applications for German and French programs have seen a decrease of 13 percent compared to 2024, with only 61 applicants. Egelund stressed the importance of improving language skills, particularly in light of rapid geopolitical changes that necessitate better understanding between people.
The application deadline for quota 1, where applicants are admitted solely based on grade point average, was Saturday at 12:00. The application deadline for quota 2, which assesses applicants based on a range of professional and general activities in addition to grade point average, was in March.
In total, 85,508 people have applied for higher education this year, representing a slight increase of 356 individuals compared to 2024. Applicants will receive notification of admission to the programs on July 28.
