The Prison and Probation Service has paid artist Ibi-Pippi Orup Sommer just over 22,500 kroner in compensation after acknowledging that her isolation and transfer to a closed prison earlier this year were unjustified. The case stemmed from a controversial artwork, “Toxic Masculinity,” which prison officials deemed offensive.
Ibi-Pippi was initially moved from the open prison in Møgelkær to the closed Nyborg Prison because of the artwork. The prison management at Møgelkær considered the piece, which depicted a female prison officer with her uniform shirt unbuttoned and a soda can between her breasts, to be sexually offensive to female employees.
Following the transfer, Ibi-Pippi was placed in solitary confinement for two days before being moved to Nyborg, where she spent a month in custody. Subsequently, she was transferred to Kragskovhede Prison, which has a closed ward.
The Prison and Probation Service has since admitted that the artwork was not offensive. As a result, Ibi-Pippi’s sentence was reduced by one day.
Ibi-Pippi gained national notoriety after being convicted of aggravated vandalism for attacking a work by Asger Jorn at Museum Jorn in Silkeborg. In the summer of 2024, the Supreme Court sentenced her to one year and six months of unconditional imprisonment for the vandalism.
