Denmark to Build New Warships in Frederikshavn

Denmark’s new warships are set to be constructed in Frederikshavn, following the recommendation of Chief of Defence Michael Hyldgaard. This decision comes after thorough preparatory work, including input from the consulting firm Deloitte. The parties behind the defense agreement were briefed on Wednesday, and a final plan is expected to be presented to the public on Friday after a meeting at the Ministry of Defence.

While the assembly will take place in Frederikshavn, other port cities, including Esbjerg, will contribute to the production of parts for the warships. A new assembly hall will be built in Frederikshavn to accommodate this process. Funding for the establishment of this hall is expected to be indicated during the Friday press conference.

The decision-making process has involved a number of factors. The Ministry of Defence hired Deloitte to advise on the optimal location for production. There has also been discussion regarding the number of new frigates to be built, but a final agreement on this matter is not expected until the autumn.

Greenlandic domestic politics have also played a role, delaying decisions regarding new capabilities for the Arctic. The Danish government is committed to involving the Greenlandic government in decisions concerning Greenland, but recent unrest in the Social Democrats’ Greenlandic sister party, Siumut, has put negotiations on hold. The unrest in Siumut also means that Greenland is not represented at the meeting in the Ministry of Defence on Friday.

The chosen model involves the state building and owning the assembly hall in Frederikshavn, while modules are constructed at other shipyards. This approach aims to ensure that the state maintains control over the assembly process and can obtain modules on market terms.
