Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyj voiced his expectation for continued American support, particularly regarding Patriot missiles, despite recent doubts cast by the USA concerning arms deliveries. He made these remarks in Aarhus during the opening of the Danish EU Presidency.
The White House confirmed on Wednesday night that the USA will reduce its arms deliveries to Ukraine, though the specific arms deliveries affected remain unclear. Concerns have arisen regarding the depletion of the USA’s own arms stockpiles.
Zelenskyj emphasized the critical need for Patriot missiles, highlighting Europe’s current inability to supply them. According to sources cited by Reuters, the reduction may include 30 Patriot missiles, a highly advanced missile system from the USA.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed the need for Europe to address gaps in arms deliveries to Ukraine should the USA cease providing them. She urged a shift in perspective, viewing European support for Ukraine as a defense of Europe against Russian aggression rather than mere donations.
Ukraine is also focusing on bolstering its own weapons production, a model championed by Denmark. Zelenskyj emphasized the need for increased funding to support Ukrainian production.
Denmark is set to lead meetings between member states and drive policy progress within the Union for the next six months, with security as the primary focus during its Presidency.
