Michael Christian Storgaard’s Final Weeks at Sankt Lukas Hospice

Michael Christian Storgaard, 60, spent his final weeks at Sankt Lukas Hospice in Hellerup, reflecting on a life well-lived and embracing the end with a positive outlook. He had been battling cancer since 2013, with the disease progressing to a “death sentence” in 2016. Despite his diagnosis, Storgaard chose to focus on living each day to the fullest. He passed away on June 22.

Storgaard found solace and comfort in the hospice, describing it as a “magical place” where he could receive the necessary care and pain relief. The hospice environment also facilitated open conversations about death, which Storgaard found liberating. He expressed gratitude for having no regrets and feeling blessed.

Throughout his life, Storgaard prioritized experiences and personal connections. He described himself as someone who chased life’s pleasures, from traveling the world to enjoying simple moments like sitting in a Parisian café. His work as a press officer at Mærsk allowed him to travel and meet exciting people. He also found joy in activities such as skiing, hiking, and biking.

In 2017, Storgaard met Alex from Austria during a trip to Vietnam. Their connection was immediate, leading to a deep and loving relationship. Alex provided unwavering support and companionship during Storgaard’s final weeks, staying by his side at the hospice.

Storgaard maintained a positive attitude despite his illness, believing it contributed to his longevity. He accepted the things he could not change and focused on living in the present moment. He emphasized the importance of not dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Storgaard found peace in planning his funeral, spending time with loved ones, and reflecting on his life’s journey.

Even as his fatigue increased and breathing became more difficult, Storgaard remained grateful for the care he received and the love he shared. He expressed a desire to protect his family from the burden of his end-of-life care, choosing to spend his final days at the hospice. Storgaard embraced death with acceptance and a sense of closure, hoping to be reunited with loved ones on the other side.
