Denmark’s stunning 2-1 victory over Canada in the World Championship quarter-final has resulted in a massive payout of 3.3 million kroner for Danish bettors. Danske Spil, a Danish betting company, reported the win as a historic upset, comparing it to the Faroe Islands defeating Argentina in a World Cup match.
The odds of Denmark winning were slim, with a Danish victory paying out more than 20 times the initial bet. At one point during the third period, with Canada leading 1-0, a Danish victory in regular time offered a return of 250 times the stake, reflecting an approximate 0.4 percent probability.
Nine out of ten Danske Spil customers who bet on the game had placed their money on a Danish victory.
Looking ahead, Denmark will face Switzerland in the semi-final on Saturday, where Danske Spil estimates Denmark has a greater chance of winning than against Canada. A Danish victory in regular time in the semi-final offers a 7.25 return.
In the other semi-final, Sweden will play against the USA. Sweden is considered the favorite to reach the final and win the tournament, with odds of 1.85 for a Swedish victory. If Denmark wins the World Cup, a bet placed on Friday morning would give 22 times the money back.
Danske Spil’s bookmaker, Jesper Gullquist, anticipates a difficult match for Denmark against Switzerland and a challenging final against Sweden, considering the Swedes will have home advantage.
