Cancer Plan 5 Focuses on Reducing Hair Loss, Banning Sunbeds for Minors, and Preventing Childhood Obesity

The Danish government has launched Cancer Plan 5, allocating DKK 600 million annually from 2025 to improve cancer prevention and treatment. The plan includes 36 initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable cancer patients, limiting tobacco and nicotine sales, and restricting unhealthy food advertisements targeting children.

A key component of the plan is a pilot program focused on minimizing hair loss in breast cancer patients undergoing treatment. The initiative will explore the use of mobile cooling caps, which cool the scalp and reduce blood circulation, thereby protecting hair follicles during treatment. The specifics of the program will be developed in collaboration with the Danish Regions, which oversee healthcare.

Another significant measure is a ban on sunbed use for individuals under 18 years old. This aims to reduce the risk of skin cancer in young people. While the current Sunbed Act regulates radiation strength and mandates health advice signage, it does not include an age limit.

The government also aims to prevent childhood obesity by restricting advertisements for unhealthy foods and drinks, such as crisps and soda, aimed at children under 15. This initiative seeks to instill healthy habits early in life, reducing the risk of developing cancer later on.

According to the Minister for the Interior and Health, Sophie Løhde, around 400,000 people in Denmark are living with or have survived cancer, and while survival rates have improved, cancer remains the leading cause of death in the country. Cancer Plan 5 aims to further improve prevention, treatment, and support for cancer patients and their families.
